Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Mayor Surendra Furtado and two others including owner of a local TV channel Anil Laad and a Marathi daily reporter Krantiraj Samrath had a narrow escape on Sunday afternoon when an amphibian vehicle, having a de-weeding machine mounted on it, turned turtle.
The journalists were invited for a demonstration of the vehicle being given by Furtado in the St Inez nullah. While the demo was in progress, the machine suddenly turned turtle resulting in the seven persons including the mayor and journalists, who were on it, slipping off. The mayor was rescued unhurt from the sewage-mixed nullah water.
It was said that the machine could not take the weight of the seven people standing on it resulting in it losing balance on one side. Furtado lost his mobile handset while one of the journalists lost his camera in the incident.
According to the machine operator, there was no technical fault in the machine, it tilted on one side because of the load. He said it is meant to carry only two persons-the operator and helper. It is learnt that Taleigao MLA Jennifer Monserrate had advised the mayor not to venture onto the machine.
