Drumming up support for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), working president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Jagat Prakash Nadda on Friday said that CAA is aimed at granting citizenship to non-Muslims who are already living within the borders of India as refugees.

“CAA has been brought to protect and give rights to the minorities barring Muslims who have already entered India and are living in refugee camps before December 31, 2014,” said Nadda while addressing BJP’s pro-CAA rally at Azad Maidan in the city.

“Where will Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians go? They have entered India after facing religious persecuted in Muslim-majority Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. As they have been religiously persecuted, we are treating them as our own people and India will do everything to protect them,” he added.

Nadda alleged that the leaders of the Congress party including its national leader Rahul Gandhi was ‘misleading’ the people and are trying to create ‘confusion’ over the CAA.

“These people (Congress) who have not understood that Pakistan is a Muslim majority country so where is the question of Muslims being persecuted in Pakistan,” he quipped.

Nadda challenged Gandhi to speak 10 lines on the Act and also, point out two reasons as to why he was opposing the Act.

“We are giving protection to those who have come to India. And whenever distressed Muslims have come from Pakistan were separately given citizenship. India believes in humanity and there are many people artists who didn’t want to live in Pakistan were given citizenship by India. And India will be sensitive if such situations arise in future,” Nadda said.

Nadda claimed that majority of the local people were happy with the scrapping of the provisions of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Only a few local leaders with vested interest are disturbing peace in Jammu and Kashmir. Now people of Kashmir will get the same right as any citizen in any state of our country. The laws which are enforced in states across the nation are being also enforced in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

Earlier in the day, thousands of BJP supporters turned up for the rally in support of CAA that was led by Nadda. The rally began from EDC Patto Plaza and culminated at Azad Maidan.

Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and BJP state unit president Vinay Tendulkar along with ministers and party MLAs also participated in the rally.

Meanwhile, about 4,600 BJP workers from four constituencies of Mormugao taluka also attended the public meeting at Azad Maidan in Panaji to extend support for CAA on Friday.

As per information from the respective heads of the party from the four constituencies of Mormugao taluka, from Mormugao constituency, 1,200 workers, from Vasco constituency 900 workers, from Cortalim constituency 500 workers and from Dabolim constituency the highest number of around 2,000 workers attended the meeting.
