Mother and daughter in tiatr

JP Pereira

Malita Braganza e Fernandes and her young daughter Crizaila, from Nuvem, have been enthralling the Konkani stage audience for quite some time. Both have been acting and singing in various plays and doing well.

The daughter of Socorrina and Joaquim Braganza who used to act on stage too, Malita enjoyed singing and acting in one act plays back in school. She began her professional career as a child artiste in the year 1999, in a tiatr titled ‘Xinkop’ by JLC Productions, Colva. She rendered the opening song and played the precocious child in the show. She continued with the same director in ‘Dotik Lagon’. Blessed with a lovely voice, she also began singing for ‘Pure Passion’ and continued with the band for two years.

“I also performed for various musical shows and when Antonio Vaz was releasing his ‘Giddh’ I was booked to perform in this tiatr. I got a good response from the audience, although this was my first professional performance as a teenager”, she says. Soon Comedian Agostinho requested her to take over an important role in ‘He Kaide Konnem Keleat’ and in the next season, booked her full time for ‘Pai’ and later ‘Picnic’. Her career went full swing and was on the rise. But then came marriage! “Everything on stage and entertainment stopped, as I had to look after my two beautiful kids and that was more important than anything else” she recounts with a smile.

She made a grand comeback in the Kala Academy Tiatr Competition. Fr Doel Dias cast her in ‘Dollo’ in the year 2017. The following year she was cast in the same director’s ‘Chuk Konnanchi’, the prize winning show at the TAG competition. Malita was back in action, both singing and acting. She played a major role in ‘Jezu Sounsarak Diat’, a Lenten play by John Miranda and has lent a helping hand to various directors, whenever they needed her to substitute. When she substituted for Comedian Sally’s superb show ‘Eke Sunecho Kaido’, her performance was so appreciated that the director asked her to continue in the show, along with Crizaila, her daughter.

“All my songs are written by my friend Elvis Gracias and I am really thankful to him for helping me out,” she says.

She has rendered songs on audio discs ‘Amche Gunn Amchi Sonskrutai’ by Inacio Palmeira and another by Jalu. She has also performed in video discs, ‘Sukh Dukh Tarvoteanchem’ and ‘NRI Goenkar’ by Jose Santos and Neville Pereira’s ‘Fulam Pormollachim’. Besides this, she has sung for the choir ‘Harmony 2000’ from Varca and is now a member of ‘Master’s Choir’ from Nuvem.

“I have sung all over Goa, Delhi, Dubai, and Muscat. This hobby of mine has enabled me to see this places and I am grateful for that.”

The pretty little Crizaila, has been singing from her years in nursery, bagging many prizes. A student of Holy Rosary convent, Nuvem, she performs at the school functions and is learning to play the violin.

Fr Doel heard about the child artiste and requested the mother to let her act in his show, ‘Dollo’. In the subsequent year, she was cast to sing and play a role of an orphan in the impressive prize winning ‘Chuk Konnanchi’. She bagged the award for best child artiste in this show, at the Kala Academy Tiatr competition. The young girl renders a comic solo in the latest sensation ‘CM’. The mother and daughter will now be seen in a grand new October 2019 release, from directors Elvis-Carmen.

“My husband (Armando Fernandes) has been a pillar of support, always encouraging and most helpful. My mother Socorrina, has been my guide and helper, whenever I have performed. In fact, she is the one who introduced me to the stage and Fr Doel helped me in my comeback. The rest of my family have also been helpful,” she says.

“God has given me this beautiful gift and blessed my two beautiful children with the talent too. I wish to thank all my co-actors and friends for their support and the audience for accepting me on stage,” she adds.
