PANAJI: The Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM), which held a symbolic dharna at the Azad Maidan in the city, on Thursday, described the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, as ‘Gang of Liars’ in connection with the medium of instruction (MoI) issue.
Earlier, the BBSM leaders and supporters of the Konkani and Marathi languages led by Subhash Velingkar took out a morcha from city ferry jetty to Azad Maidan.
The dharna was in support of the demands of the Manch, which include withdrawal of ‘stopgap’ government aid, from the academic year 2016-17 to 100-odd Konkani schools, which had overnight switched to English medium, and immediate implementation of all facilities assured to Marathi and Konkani medium primary schools by the government, in its Medium of Instruction Policy.
The BBSM also demanded filing of criminal cases against the members and supporters of the Forum for Rights of Children to Education (FORCE), who organised rasta roko at 17 places during the agitation on July 31, earlier this year, and ‘held the people of Goa to ransom.’
Velingkar, speaking on the occasion said that the BBSM committees would start functioning in all talukas, to get these demands fulfilled. He also warned that the agitation would continue till it reaches its logical end.
The Konkani protagonist, Uday Bhembre said that the perception as regards maximum number of parents in Goa supporting government grants to primary English schools is a myth.
He also stated that the agitation of BBSM is not reactionary to any organisation, but has been undertaken to support Konkani and Marathi primary education.
“The BJP leaders gave false assurances to come to power and then backtracked by betraying the trust of the people of Goa,” Bhembre said, adding that they are nothing but a gang of liars.
The BBSM leaders namely Anil Samant, Subhash Desai, Pundalik Naik, Arvind Bhatikar, Nagesh Karmali and Pandurang Nadkarni participated in the dharna.
