MMC chief takes stock of complaints over birth certificate issuance delay

MARGAO: Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Dr Babita Prabhudesai alongwith some councillors visited the birth registration section of MMC on Thursday following complaints from the citizens that the birth certificates were not being issued promptly.

“I received complaints that birth certificates are not being issued promptly. The certificate which is to be issued on the same day, takes three-four days and as such the citizens have to make several trips to the office,” she said.

“The concerned official informed me that there is shortage of staff as few of the staffers is on leave and on an average 700 to 800 applications are received in a day.  The official is overloaded with the work,” added Prabhudesai.

To resolve the issue temporarily, the chairperson assured to depute a clerk from other section to handle the work.

Prabhudesai, expressing laments, stated that she had written to the government to fill up vacant posts at the earliest.
