MARGAO: Former PWD minister Churchill Alemao, who also held rural development portfolio, said his work for the poor and the people living below poverty line has been acknowledged on the floor of the House by former chief minister Manohar Parrikar and also the incumbent Laxmikant Parsekar.
He was hitting out at the RDA Minister Francis Xavier Pacheco alias Mickky who alleged that Alemao had misused the RDA portfolio during his tenure.
“Manohar Parrikar and Laxmikant Parsekar have acknowledged my work in the RDA department on the floor of the House. Present RDA Minister Pacheco’s immature comments do not deserve any reaction,” Alemao said, while speaking on the sidelines of a media briefing in Margao.
He said upliftment of the BPL families has been his priority. Alemao, who was recently awarded the Akhil Bharatiya Manav Adhikar Samman 2014 by All India Council of Human Rights, Liberties and Social Justice on December 9, at Delhi, under the category of ‘Best Mass Leader of India 2014’, said, “I will reciprocate their action by pledging to work for promotion of human rights in Goa as well as India in a suitable manner.”
He said an annual award will be presented in the name of his parents Brar and Eslinda Alemao and Rs 25,000 and a citation will be presented as Goa Award for Human Rights.
He said India still lacks the culture of human rights and that human dignity has not been given the attention it deserves.
He claimed that poverty is a major factor contributing to the rise in human rights violations in India.
