Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party president Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar on Thursday exuded confidence of winning 12 zilla panchayat segments out of 19 in which the party will field nominees.
Addressing media persons in Ponda during the induction into the MGP of former sarpanch of Curti-Khandepar panchayat Priya Chari and 40 others, Dhavalikar said, “Although we are not sure whether a small state like Goa needs ZPs, we have focused on the elections as the polls give a chance to the party to reconnect with its voters.”
“It helps us test our strength before we go for big
elections,” he reckoned, adding that the MGP will name its candidates in the
next two-three days.
The focus talukas for the party will be Ponda, Pernem and Sanvordem (Sangeum taluka).
He lamented that ZP members are not given required funds by the government to carry out works.
Asked about chances of a Congress-MGP alliance for the ZP elections, Dhavalikar said that anything is possible in a state like Goa.
“Talks are going on for cobbling up an alliance and forming strategies for the ZP polls. A decision on the same will be made within week’s time,” he disclosed.
Priya Chari, who quit the BJP and joined the MGP on Thursday, said that she was upset with the BJP government and its unfulfilled promises.
“I worked for the BJP for the last seven-eight years, but did not get the required support… Hence I have joined the MGP,” she said.
