Merces ex-sarpanch’s death: order on Wilson’s anticipatory bail tomorrow

Panaji: Opposing the anticipatory bail, the Old Goa police have sought custodial interrogation of Wilson Godinho, who was among the two who were booked for alleged abetment of suicide of former sarpanch of Merces Prakash Naik. Godinho had filed anticipatory bail application before the District and Sessions Court, Panaji. After the hearing, the court has reserved the order to Thursday. Police has contended that from the investigation conducted so far and as per the statements recorded of the family members and other witnesses, it is revealed that the deceased person was being harassed by the accused person to return his money.

According to the police, the investigation is at the preliminary stage and statements of more witnesses are yet to be recorded. Police has contended that the custody of the accused person is required in order to conduct thorough investigation and to find out how the deceased was harassed and threatened. So also to conduct detail investigation in respect of the development of the property alleged and money involved, police said.

Godinho contended that on January 17 after getting to know of the incident, he had approached the Old Goa police and had volunteered to give his statement, however police had said that it was not necessary as no FIR was registered.

Claiming innocence, Godinho contended that he has strong reasons to believe that on account of political pressure and influence exerted by the political parties, some malicious plans and designs have been worked out with an intention to implicate him in the case.

On Sunday, the police had booked Godinho and Tahir under the IPC Section 306 following a complaint lodged by Akshaya Govekar, sister of Naik.

The former sarpanch was found dead at his residence at Voilem Bhat in Merces on Friday. Police said the post-mortem report confirmed that Naik died due to craniocerebral damage as a result of a ‘perforating firearm missile injury’.

According to the family members, on Friday, before he was found dead, Naik had posted a message on a WhatsApp group. In the message, Naik said that he is tired of everything, alleging that the two persons started harassing him. Naik had said that these two persons should be held responsible for his death.
