Now known for offering a wide range of stationery items, V P Pai Bhale & Brothers situated in Panaji was earlier into hardware and glasses. Founded by Pandurang Suriaji Pai Bhale, the stationery store was later run by his son Venkatesh Pai Bhale along with his brothers Vithal and Ramnath. After Venkatesh’s death in 1974, his son Jayant V Pai Bhale continued the family business and has been running it till date. “As far as I can remember the store has been running for more than 90 years. While we earlier dealt with hardware and glass, since 1965 we have been exclusively into the stationery business,” says Jayant.

Besides this store they also used to have another shop located in Magnum Chambers, Panaji. This is now being used as a godown to store goods required for the store.  Over the years, the store has received a really good response from customers and even today, despite a lot of competition in the market they get a number of clients every day. “We get customers of different age groups from across Goa and we have been doing good business all these years because we have run this business with full sincerity. All our products are of really good quality and we sell at most competitive rates,” says Jayant, adding that they do not compromise on quality and that is the reason for their business being successful.

Jayant further states that customers come to their shop as they get some exclusive products which not everybody has in stock. “We have envelopes in different sizes, account books, files and folders in different variety and quantity available here,” he says.

They also have a range of stationery including different types of paper, handmade sketch pads, computer papers, copier papers, art material, oil colours, poster colours, paint brushes, canvas, variety of pens, etc. Most of the products are brought directly from the company and they have dealers from Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. However, Jayant does not know who will carry on the business in the future. “I have two daughters, one is an engineer and the other is a chartered accountant and both are married,” he says. “As long as I am there, I will run it.”
