Margao : Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Babita Prabhudesai on Tuesday said the council has decided to file a public interest litigation (PIL) in the court against panchayats over dumping of waste in the MMC jurisdiction.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’, Prabhudesai said, “We have decided to file a PIL in the court against neighbouring panchayats over waste dumping in the MMC jurisdiction and also at the black spots. MMC had earlier warned these panchayats through a written letter. But now we are left with no other option.”
The issue is that continuous dumping of waste has been happening at the black spots where waste is disposed of in plastic bags. There are around 50 black spots identified by the MMC.
“This is an additional problem for us. Many of the neighbouring panchayats do not have mechanism in place to treat their own waste and as a result, people from those villages are compelled to dump waste in MMC areas,” she said.
It may be recalled that in the past a letter had been written to the director of panchayats and BDOs seeking details about waste disposal mechanism adopted by 10 plus panchayats of Salcete.
MMC is also facing a dilemma over Sonsoddo dump as the Fomento company is demanding that waste should be brought in segregated form for treatment.
Presently, MMC is facing challenge of collecting segregated waste from black spots as people keep dumping mixed waste at such sites. The council is paying Rs 1 lakh per day to the Fomento for treating segregated waste.
The district and the sessions court has extended time till November end, considering the plea of MMC, and has asked the civic body to find out a solution to the problem within the given time.
