Margao civic body issued Rs 17.28 lakh worth tenders in first 6 months

The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has issued tenders for as many as 41 works that mostly include repairs and construction of drains and gutters with RCC slabs and cleaning of wells entailing funds of Rs 17,28,393 in the first six months of the year 2019. The works also include repairs of Sulabh Shouchalaya complex at Monte Hill. However, there were no tenders floated in the month of April and May.

Out of the 41 works, MMC has made payments towards nine works which were completed in January. However, the process to pay 26 contractors, whose bills were forwarded for payments after executing the works, is underway. This was revealed during a reply by MMC to the House when the Curtorim legislator Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco sought to know as to how many works the MMC has tendered in each of the years since 2015.

Interestingly, two works though tendered, have not been executed which includes the re-construction of the existing drains along a bar-cum-restaurant at Fatorda and another at Gogol, opposite to Cooperation Bank.

MMC sources said that the engineers and administration section officials wanted to verify the works before clearing the bills due to which the bills are not cleared. MMC has floated five tenders – four in ward 6 for around 20 wells and one in ward number 7 to clean two public wells in the month of June at a cost of Rs 2,06,818. The bills of cleaning of public wells are however not cleared, according to the information submitted during the monsoon session of the assembly, which concluded recently. Rs 40,000 were spent in cleaning of the public wells from the same ward number 6 in the year 2017. The information revealed that the civic body has spent Rs 40,000 in each ward of MMC’s 25 wards in the year 2017 indicating that there are nearly 100-plus public wells within the jurisdiction of the civic body.
