Alleging that they are being harassed by municipal staff deputed at the fish market, Mapusa fish vendors called on the chief officer of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and demanded removal of the staff deputed at the fish market and sought replacement.
Over 50 fish vendors under the aegis of Mapusa fish vendors’ association led by its president Shashikala Govekar marched to the MMC office on Monday morning and raised the grievances faced at the fish market.
President of Mapusa fish vendors association Govekar was called inside the cabin by chief officer Clen Maderia when the former informed that the new staff deployed at the fish market are harassing fish vendors. She also said that the fish market is unable to cater to the number of fish vendors in the market due to space constraint.
Fish vendors claimed that earlier also they had raised the issue with municipality but no action was taken hence they had come to met the chief officer.
Govekar said that they have demanded that the earlier staff should be deployed back at the market adding, “We have also assured that business in fish market will continue peacefully.”
She further said that “for a number of years we have been doing business here in the market but due to space constrain vendors are forced to sit on the floor and carry out business.”
MMC chief officer Clen Maderia informed that necessary action will be initiated. He further said, “I have also asked fish vendors to maintain discipline in the fish market and not squat on the floor to carry out business as they have to do business in the well defined slots and to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.”
