MAPUSA: The Mapusa police, on Monday, arrested the driver of the passenger bus, which had fatally knocked down a scooter rider and Khorlim resident, Uttam alias Gopal Arabekar (48), on Sunday evening near Chacha Nehru Park in Mapusa.
The police informed that driver identified as Yogesh Tari (21), a resident of Pirna has been arrested.
The police said that they will be writing to RTO, requesting it to suspend commercial vehicle badge of the accused.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was handed over to the family after autopsy. It may recalled that the rider died as he came under the wheels of the passenger bus, near Chacha Nehru Park in Mapusa.
Thereafter, the enraged locals and family members had blocked the road and demanded immediate arrest of the bus driver.
They had also questioned as to why no action was being taken against vehicles that were parked along the main road proceeding towards Khorlim.
The deceased rider was travelling home from Mapusa on his scooter when the passenger bus knocked him down. The scooter was hit on the side resulting in Arabekar falling on the road and coming under the wheels of the bus.
Following the accident, the bus driver had fled the spot. A fire tender was summoned to clear the accident spot of blood.
Mapusa police conducted panchanama and have registered offences against the driver under Sections 279 and Section 304 A of Indian Penal Code. Later, in the evening, NCP general secretary Sanjay Barde, councillor Joshua D’Souza, councillor Sudhir Kandolkar, advocate Mahesh Rane had visited the spot and met the police and demanded action against the driver.
