Mandopa stroll past DBO Fatorda



Second half strikes from Presly Gomes, Langston Luis and substitute Preston Costa helped Mandopa SC register a comfortable 3-0 win against Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda and enter the quarterfinals of 10th Cuncolim Union Rolling Trophy football tournament played at Cuncolim grounds on Thursday.

Mandopa SC went into lead in the 40th minute when swift footed striker Presly Gomes dashed into the box and on receiving a neat pass from Mizio Pexote, banged the ball to the far corner of Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda nets, giving no chance at all to keeper Swizel Pereira.

Goaded by the success, Mandopa SC who spread the ball well buttressed their lead in the 50th minute of play through attacking medio Lanston Luis whose angular effort crashed to the far corner of rival nets off a neat pass from Climax Lawrence.

Substitute Preston Costa made the score 3-0 in favour of Mandopa SC in the 69th minute when he deftly placed the ball to the far corner of Don Bosco Oratory nets off a cross from the left flank.

Earlier in the 15th minute of play, Mandopa’s Presley Gomes who was in the thick of action dispatched a good shot when Langston sent a smart cross to him from the right flank, but the rival keeper Swizel managed to bring a smart save.

Thereafter Climax Lawrence unleashed a powerful shot in the 23rd minute which the rival keeper parried away and the ball fell at the feet of Presly Gomes who surprisingly shot the ball wide from close distance. Don Bosco Oratory in a counter offensive saw Danny Dias sending a strong header off a cross from Veltio Miranda but the Mandopa keeper Selvin Gomes saved it in nick of time. The second session saw Madopa SC having complete control over the proceedings, with some meticulous moves they were able to score through Presly Gomes, Langston Luis and substitute Preston Costa. Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda were at the back foot for most part of the second session and were only able to create some counter forays which had no effect at all as the Mandopa defence stood firm.

Mandopa could have inflated their score had all the tries made by the strikers entered the rival nets.

Don Bosco Oratory keeper Swizel was seen busy throughout the second session and did put up a brave show under the bar.

Mandopa’s Presly Gomes who was the pick of the lot won the man-of-the-match award at the hands of chief guest Sanjay Fernandes, proprietor of Archie Restaurant.
