Making Panaji Smart

Out of three cities the state had proposed for Smart City, Panaji has made it to the first list of 98 cities. Margao and Vasco would have to wait. The government and Corporation of City of Panaji have a daunting task ahead to fulfill the requirements of a smart city as proposed by the Centre. The core infrastructure elements include adequate water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, affordable housing, good IT connectivity and e-governance among other things. Much has to be done by the government to achieve these. In the first year, Rs 200 crore will be released by the Centre and thereafter Rs 100 crore annually for the next three years. It is not an easy task and Goa government has to be happy to get a smart city despite the fact that several cities in the country which were better placed than Panaji lost out due to regional politics. For instance, Asansol, the constituency of Minister of State for Urban Development (the ministry that handles the Smart City Mission) Babul Supriyo was not even put up for the bid. The Centre had given respective state governments a free hand to select “their” cities. So, politics played a major role. The ball is in the Goa government’s court and it is time to demonstrate it has the willpower and a capable machinery to convert Panaji into a smart city with all the facilities within the stipulated timeframe.
