The state government by withdrawing the security personnel deployed to protect state Congress president Luizinho Faleiro, has made him vulnerable to attack by terror groups, especially from Manipur who had attacked him in the past in that state. The state has a large number of people from Manipur whose antecedents are not known.
In an informal chat with reporters on Friday, Faleiro said that his security was withdrawn by the government about a month and half ago. He, however, said that he has not asked the police or the government as to why his security was withdrawn. Prior to withdrawal of the security cover, two policemen were guarding him.
He said that security was being provided to him all over the country (except Goa) after the Manipur inspector general of police (intelligence) sent a message to heads of police in the country about threats by various militant groups to his life.
Faleiro, as member of Congress Working Committee and general secretary in-charge of Manipur was instrumental in getting the Congress government elected to that state. His convoy was attacked just a couple of days before the last Manipur assembly elections.
The Manipur IGP had in a communiqué to all police chiefs stated that Faleiro is one of the prime targets of militants for his role in the elections. He had also stated that militant groups from Manipur were known to be operating in other states and in view of that, adequate security cover be provided to him during his visit/stay in different parts of the country.
The state police officials gave different reasons for the withdrawal the security cover to Faleiro. While one official said that this was decided by the security review committee, another said that it was a political decision but refused to go into the details. Yet another official said that he was unaware of any communication being there to provide security cover to the state Congress president.
