Opposition to the controversial urban tag to villages faces more opposition as villages of
Davorlim and Aquem Baixo received support from Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro to protect the agricultural fields in Navelim constituency.

Aquem Baixo sarpanch Subash Satardekar said the panchayat is fully opposed to the village being classified as urban area as the village consists of fields which are still cultivated. He said the decision among the villagers is unanimous that Aquem Baixo should remain as a village.

He said we have already discussed the matter at a special gram sabha and a resolution was passed unanimously to oppose the urban tag. He said not only the gram sabha but also the panchayat body is strongly opposing the urbanisation of the village.

Davorlim sarpanch, Siya Varak said the panchayat has convened a special gram sabha to discuss the matter after the village panchayat received several letters from villagers opposing the urbanisation of Davorlim.

She said the gram sabha will be held on February 23 adding that the panchayat body is also unanimous on the decision to oppose and want the village dropped from the urban list. She said the panchayat was never taken into confidence on the matter and were taken aback when it was notified that the village was added to the urban list.

Speaking to reporters the Navelim MLA said, “We strongly oppose this sinister move and will not tolerate the government converting our green landscape to a red landscape. All the panchayats will object this move by the government to declare the villages as urban areas.”

He charged that the move will only help the builder lobby and will not help the farmers, adding that this move will result in increase in FAR of buildings which will benefit the builder lobby after being notified as urban areas.
