Calangute: The Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, on Friday, instructed the Simplex Company officials to start the work on the pumping station at Gaurawaddo (East) (survey no 118/1), where the land has already been acquired for the purpose.
The residents there objected to the construction of the pumping station over the fear that it will overflow and start stinking after some years of its operation as most of the government projects are not well maintained.
They also have raised the issue of a well there getting contaminated.
They asked the MLA to construct the pumping station some 150 metres backside in the same property rather than close to the main road.
Meanwhile, as the Calangute MLA along with the sarpanch of Calangute Shawn Martin and Simplex Company officials visited the pumping station site, the locals raised their objection.
Earlier, the temple committee in whose property, the PWD has acquired the site for the pumping station at Gaurawaddo (East) told the contractor to construct the pumping station in its another property at Naikawaddo, but the residents there also objected, and then the MLA had no other choice but to instruct the contractor to start the work at the Gaurawaddo (East) site.
Clearing the apprehensions in the minds of the people, Lobo said that “this is a pumping station, and not a sewage treatment plant. The sewage is needed to be pumped from the area to the sewage treatment plant, and if this is not done, chambers will overflow and later the people will blame me.”
The residents requested the MLA to construct the pumping station some 150 metres at the backside in the same property for which they do not have any objection but when an official of the Simplex Company was asked he told that construction was not feasible there.
Lobo later called the PWD officials and requested them to come at the site and see if it is possible to construct the pumping station at the backside of the site. At this juncture, the officials said that within few days they will inspect the site and see if it is feasible to construct the pumping station there.
Simplex officials, when questioned on the feasibility of construction, they said that “the present location is just 15 meters away from the main sewer line. It is possible only if the PWD and JICA Company give us a green signal.”
Lobo said,“Let the pumping station come up at the same spot where the land has been acquired at Gaurawaddo (East), if it is not possible to construct it at the backside in the same property.”
