Lively Liver

The liver is one of the five eliminatory organs in our body and we barely take any care of this precious organ. The liver is involved in many metabolic activities that take place in our body – the nutrients from the food that we eat are stored in liver and then supplied to the cells and other body parts whenever needed. The main function of the liver is detoxification. It filters the blood coming from digestive tract before circulating it throughout the body, and detoxifies chemicals and helps our body metabolise a drug
or medicine.

Bile as you know is produced by the liver and is important for digestion and absorption of fat in the small intestine. The liver also produces protein which helps in blood clotting as well as in the production of red blood cells (RBC). These are just a few of the important functions of the liver. Since it deals with so many complex activities, we need to take extra care of this special organ.

A few people much a lot of pressure on the liver by drinking large amounts of alcohol. This prevents he liver form performing its regular activities. How will it perform its best? Won’t the liver show diseased symptoms? It’s high time we understand the ill-effects of alcohol on the liver and consume the same in moderation.

There are few superfoods that cleanse and enhance the functioning of the liver. Here are a few:

Carrots and beetroots:  The orange antioxidant pigment found in these vegetables reduces the load on the liver and improves its functioning. Additionally, these vegetables have glutathione which is an antioxidant that helps in the detoxification of the liver. 

Lemon: It is the best source of vitamin C that boosts the production of enzymes, which help in natural liver detoxification. It is always advisable to drink a glass of lemon water first thing in morning as well as before consuming alcoholic drinks in order to keep the body alkaline and reduce the pressure on the liver.

Green leafy vegetables: The most powerful superfoods are leafy vegetables that contain chlorophyll, which helps cleanse not only the liver but also the colon, lungs, etc, and helps detoxify blood. Green leafy vegetables work by eliminating heavy metal from the body, thus they have a protective role. 

Ginger: The therapeutic and detoxifying properties of ginger are due to its high concentration of gingerol (phytochemical). It helps improve the digestive enzymes and cleanses the liver.

Garlic: It’s the superfood loaded with nutrients like sulphur, allicin, phosphorous, vitamin B6, manganese and selenium that helps activate liver enzymes, which are essential for flushing out toxins from the body.

Cruciferous vegetables: Consuming these vegetables increases the production of glucosinolate in the body, which helps eliminate toxins through the liver and improves its functioning.

Sugarcane: It is super alkaline in nature and helps maintain the pH balance in the body and liver. The antioxidants present in this fruit protect the liver from damage and also help cure jaundice. It also prevents alcohol and other toxic items from getting converted into harmful compounds in the liver.

Nourish your body well with regular activity and avoid overeating as well as over drinking to
keep the liver health in check.
