As Goa battles COVID-19 along with other states, section 144 and other restrictions dampened the much awaited Sao Joao festivities in the state.
Here and there, in hidden places, known village wells, and ponds low-scale festivities of Sao Joao were witnessed. People in small groups who were vigilant yet carefree were determined not to let the celebrations be curtailed without taking a dip in the pond, sipping on some feni and chomping on some seasonal fruits donning the traditional ‘kopel’.
In abiding with the orders of the government, only four boats participated in the subdued festivities at Siolim. And while the rituals have been followed for over a century, prayers were dedicated to those living with the virus and for those who have succumbed to it.
