Law students speak up on consumer protection

V M Salgaocar College of Law, Miramar, organised a two-day national seminar on Consumer Protection Act: Challenges and Problems in the Service Sector. Dr MRK Prasad, principal, delivered the welcome address while Govind Gaude, minister for civil supplies and consumer affairs, was the chief guest. Emphasising on the importance of consumer protection laws, Gaude, said that, consumers must be more vigilant in order to avail their rights. The two-day seminar, on October 29and 30 had expert speakers, including, Prof Dr Suresh Misra, Dr Sapna Chadha, Centre for Consumer Studies, IIPA, New Delhi, Dr G Shaber Ali, Kamaxi Sambari, assistant professor and Roland Martins, convener, GOACAN

The seminar on day one highlighted how consumers are cheated by misleading advertisement. On day two the technical sessions included topics such as challenges to consumer rights protection in the current era of e-commerce. About 70 law students and academicians participated in the seminar which also had 28 paper presentations on various issues and problems relating to the service sector. Participants were Goans as well as other neighbouring states and Delhi. The seminar was organised in collaboration with the Centre For Consumer Studies, Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, sponsored by the Department Of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
