In fact, the thought had never crossed her mind. Introduced to the art as a child by her mother, Menezes used to enjoy crocheting table pieces, flowers, candle holders, etc.
But a visit by fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, changed things. “I showed him my work when he came over to my house and he told me that we should do something together,” says the Colvale- based Menezes, 19. While Menezes initially created crochet flowers, Rodricks suggested that she try to make something asymmetrical. Thus, she came up with the idea of doing a pair of spiral earrings. On Rodricks’ suggestion, these were to get bigger in size as they went lower. “I had never done something like this but I decided to give it a try,” says Menezes. The piece was part of the Schulen Fernandes for Wendell Rodricks ‘Zentangle’ Collection, which featured at the Grand Finale show in Delhi at the Lotus Make-up India Fashion Week.
“I had never seen crochet used on the ramp before and it got me thinking about how this art can be used to create more things,” says Menezes. Interestingly, her mother too had previously created a delicate hair accessory for Rodricks back in 1995 which featured on the Femina magazine.
As part of their ‘Festive Edit’, in December, and with an aim of supporting slow fashion and promoting local artists, the Wendell Rodricks Design Space, Campal also showcased a special range of her crochet jewellery like statement earrings, necklaces and bracelets, all done in fun colours.
“I looked up the internet for inspiration only, as we don’t copy designs. Wendell also helped me in coming up with designs,” says Menezes, who now wants to experiment more with the art. “I would like to make a leg accessory with crochet. It will be something different,” she says.
And Menezes’ talents are not restricted just to crochet. The youngster who is pursuing her Bachelors in Science at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa is also a trained classical jazz singer and a keyboard teacher. “I started learning the keyboard when I was eight years old. After I joined the Stuti Choral Ensemble choir last year, I was fascinated with the piano and decided to learn the instrument too. Musician Jason Quadros is teaching me,” says Menezes, who is currently working on some new crochet designs to put up at the Wendell Rodricks Design Space.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.8″][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.8″] Colvale youngster Ornella Menezes recently created statement crochet jewellery for the Schulen Fernandes for Wendell Rodricks ‘Zentangle’ Collection which featured at the Lotus Make-up India Fashion Week in Delhi.
