Lesson 23

Grunt – a low, short sound made by a person or animal, often showing effort, pain, or dissatisfaction.

Example Sentence – The worker gave a tired grunt as he lifted the heavy box.

Engulf – to completely cover or surround something.

Example Sentence – Thick smoke began to engulf the building during the fire.

Squelch – to crush or suppress something completely; also, a soft sound made by liquid or mud.

Example Sentence – The manager quickly squelched the rumour spreading in the office.

Wisp – a small, thin, delicate piece or amount of something.

Example Sentence – A wisp of smoke rose from the candle after it was blown out.

Indict – to formally accuse someone of a serious crime in a court of law.

Example Sentence – The court decided to indict the businessman for fraud.

Cluster – a group of similar things close together.

Example Sentence – A cluster of stars shone brightly in the night sky.

Gusto – great enjoyment, energy, and enthusiasm.

Example Sentence – She sang the song with great gusto at the party.

Seminar – a small class or meeting where people discuss a topic or receive training.

Example Sentence – I attended a seminar on digital marketing last weekend.

Thrifty – careful with money and resources; not wasteful.

Example Sentence – My grandmother is very thrifty and always saves money when shopping.

Desolate – empty, lonely, and without life or activity.

Example Sentence – The abandoned village looked desolate after the storm.
