Kia Motors gears for full-throttle presence in India

The company recently concluded a design tour in Goa to popularize its models and is finalizing the local dealership, reports Team B&C

Korean automobile company cruised into Goa last week with a design tour showcasing two of its models- Carnival and the Nero.

Both the models are likely to be part of Kia’s portfolio in India in the future although for the present the company is focused on the SP2i, a mid-SUV which is going to be a Made in India product.

The Sp2i is expected to take on the Hyundai Creta in competition and was first showcased in the Auto Expo 2018, Delhi.

“The SP2i is scheduled for a July 2019 launch and it will be our first product in India,” said Manhee Cho, senior general manager, sales, Kia Motors India. He indicated that, the company is looking out for a dealership partner in the state.

Goan interest in Kia automobiles is high after Pope Francis ditched his Mercedes for a Kia vehicle during his Abu Dhabi visit. Ground level check reveals that there are several enquiries for the cars that are now associated with practical and value for money.

Meanwhile, the Kia Motors plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh is complete and the facility is likely to start commercial production soon. The 536-acre plant has installed capacity of three lakh vehicles and expects to create over 3,000 direct and 7,000 indirect jobs in the region. The plant investment is US $ 2 billion and it is constructed with world class technology. The plant has more than 300 robots automating the press, body and paint shops. It is also capable of producing hybrid and electric vehicles.

The plant is also environment friendly with 100 per cent water recycling and houses a five-acre training facility that offers basic technical course for skill development of locals in automobiles. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in complementing the company’s other plants in Korea, Slovakia, China, USA and Mexico.

Cho said that, the company aims to launch a new car every six months and will have a portfolio of at least five vehicles by 2021. “We aim to be among the top five car companies of India within three years,” he said. Cho added that, the company is India to give customers a premium experience and stay true to its motto of ‘power to surprise.’.

Globally Kia Motors produces three million cars a year and is reputed to be among the top manufacturer of world-class, quality vehicles.

Kia Motors inaugurated its first dealership opened in Noida, Delhi on February 14. More dealerships are in the pipeline as the company gears for full-throttle presence in India.
