It is quite rare to find singers venturing into filmmaking and here is Bollywood singer Arijit Singh, known for his popular hits like ‘Tera Fitoor’, ‘Tum Hi Ho’, ‘Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahunga’ and many others, who will soon make his Bollywood debut with the film ‘Sa’. Singh was invited to speak at the In conversation ‘Hitting the Right Notes’ session held at Maquinez Palace as a part of the 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
Arijit’s upcoming film ‘Sa’ is about music and in this film he has tried experimenting with different genres of music. Speaking at the conversation Arijit said: “There are many things that we don’t express and in this film we have tried to bring that element to light. We have tried to show how a musical note starts with ‘sa’ and comes back to ‘sa’, and we have tried connecting this with our lives.”
His son is on his acting debut through this film. Explaining the reason for choosing to work with his son Singh said: “We needed a lead actor who could portray innocence and sincerity. My son was always around me while I worked on the film along with my wife. He fit the role perfectly. He was brave and really did a good job which was way beyond my expectations of him.”
Singh then spoke about the difficult aspect of making a movie and said that it is easy to compose a song than make a movie. “I didn’t know making a film takes so much effort. It’s been hectic and the toughest part is patience. But we loved the process. We had a lot to express,” said Singh.
The fame, praise and appreciations that came his way was all a learning experience and he strongly believes that life is all about learning new things. He idolises legendary singers like Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and others who have inspired him.
When asked about the positives of having a unique voice, he hinted on its drawbacks and said that having a unique voice limits and restricts singers as people believe their voices can only suit a particular genre or type.
Throwing light on the bond he shares with singer Pritam Chakraborty, Singh said: “Pritam is one of the sweetest persons I have met in Mumbai. One day when I was working in my hometown I got a call from him and he asked me to pack my bag and come to Mumbai. That is when our journey began. He is an amazing person to work with and one of his best qualities is his love for music which is very important for a singer. Pritam always supports and encourages new talent.”
In order to makes his fans and audiences happy at IFFI 2018, Singh picked up a guitar and sang two songs ‘Naina Banjare’ and ‘Hawaayein’, much to the audience’s delight.
