An inter class debate on, ‘Mopa Airport-Development or Displacement’ was organised at Don Bosco College, Panaji by the department of Social Work on February 7, 2015. Speaking on the occasion, the manager of Don Bosco College Fr Wilfred Fernandes, said that such debates will invoke the thoughts and voices of the students and train them to improve their skills. The moderators for the debate were the faculties of the Social Work department Vasudha Savaikar and Pratibha Naik.
The students who spoke in favour of Mopa airport development opined that the airport would bring development by increasing the state revenue in tourism and trade, and would also increase employment opportunities for the youth. The students who spoke about displacement pointed out that due to development projects many people get displaced and do not get rehabilitated. They also raised the issue of environment and the rights of the marginalised Dhangar community.
Leroy Veleso and Glenda Mascarenhas were the judges for the debate. Pearl Fernandes and Jofran Fernandes from the Travel and Tourism department were declared winners. The debate was compered by Alisha Dias.
