India hopes Pak will provide full consular access to Jadhav

New Delhi: India on Thursday expressed the hope that Pakistan will provide full consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, who is jailed in Pakistan for the past three years, in compliance and conformity with the recent judgement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and provisions of the Vienna Convention.

“We are in touch with Pakistani authorities through diplomatic channels to facilitate full consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav at the earliest,’’ External Affairs Ministry’s official spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told journalists at the regular media briefing.

In its judgement on July 17, the ICJ, based in The Hague, Netherlands, had ordered consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav who was convicted by a Pak military court of charges of spying and suspended the death sentence given to him by the military court.

India has maintained that Jadhav was carrying out his business activities in Chabahar in Iran and he had been kidnapped by Pakistani agents in 2016 and forced to record his confession of being a spy.

India’s repeated requests for granting consular access had been denied by Islamabad. The ICJ heard the matter over the past year and gave its judgement last week.

Responding to a query about Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement  that 40,000 terrorists were still operating from Pakistani soil, the spokesperson said that it was a “glaring admission’’ by Pak leadership and it was not for the first time that Pakistani leadership had owned it up.

The spokesperson said that such terrorists being trained in camps in Pakistan were being sent to India.

“It is time for Pakistan to take credible and irreversible action against terrorists camps and dismantle this terror infrastructure under control of Pakistan which has become a safe haven and sanctuary for terrorists. Half-hearted steps to fool international community will not do,’’ the spokesperson said.
