Hard work, patience will be key to FC Goa’s success this ISL: Zico

PANAJI: As FC Goa getting set for the second season of the Indian Super League (ISL), the fans will have a lot of expectations from coach Zico who was instrumental in taking the side into the semifinals in its first edition. The fans will now be hoping that the legendary Brazilian complete his unfinished job and bring home the coveted trophy this season.

However the 62-year-old gaffer, who has seen it all and experienced it all in his entire footballing career, is of the view that only hard work and patience will help his team achieve desired results.

“Everyone knows the difficulties we had last year but only hard work and patience can help us to overcome the problems and bring lot of happiness,” Zico said.

“At no moment we will stop believing in ourselves,” Zico said as he claimed that the cooperation from the players, fans and team officials have boosted their confidence and given them strength to reach their goals.

Interacting with the fans during team’s official kit launch on Thursday, Zico told fans that they would not lack anything from their part in their season two journey. “The dedication, desire and willingness to win will not lack from out part and we will give our best,” the gaffer said. Zico said that though the present FC Goa squad looks stronger on the paper it will have to prove it on the field.

“On paper, we have a stronger squad as compared to last year but they should prove it on the ground,” the coach cautioned.

However, the veteran gaffer was quick to say that even the last year’s squad was good.

Zico, whose contract runs until 2017 as FC Goa manager, said that he came back this year to keep his word given to club co-owners Shrinivas Dempo and Dattaraj Salgaocar and hoped that the two years would be even better.

Though the Gaurs had an impressive pre-season in Dubai and in Goa, the legendary Brazilian said that the real test awaits them in the ISL.

“We will get to know about our team in the tournament because playing friendlies is different from playing for a game worth three points,” said Zico.

While some of his players will be unavailable for their opening fixtures due to international duties and injuries, Zico is optimistic that his team would give their best with the available players.

The legendary Brazilian had proved his mettle in the first edition of ISL when he led the Goan team into the semifinals with many of the players unavailable due to injuries and this time too he is sure to weave his magic.

As FC Goa play their first match of the season against Delhi Dynamos on October 4, Zico urged the crowd to come in large numbers and back the team just like they did it last year.
