GOACAN is observing a month long green consumer awareness campaign that started on April 22, Earth Day and will end on May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity.
Consumer forums from different villages are participating in the campaign with volunteers trying to promote the importance of the Biodiversity Management Committee, Village Water & Sanitation Committee and the Village Garbage Management Committee at village gram sabha meetings.
Forum volunteers will undertake special drives at the local level to collect used batteries and e-waste, promote the use of ritthe the soap nut, the use of solar energy and rain water harvesting and also create awareness to save frogs from being poached this monsoon.
During the month volunteers will be meet officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Goa Waste Management Corporation, Goa Energy Development Agency and the Goa State Biodiversity Board so as to understand the role and responsibility of these agencies.
A special effort is also being made to promote organic farming, kitchen gardening and mobilise support for the forthcoming Konkan Fruit Fest to be organised in Panaji by the Botanical Society of Goa.
