The government has constituted a review committee headed by the Conservator of Forests (Conservation) to review the private forests areas provisionally identified by the North and South Goa Forest Division Committees.

The Additional Collectors (North and South Goa Districts); director of settlement and land records; director of agriculture; and assistant conservators of forests,  Headquarters, North as well as South Goa Division are the members of the committee. The deputy conservator of forests (working plan) is the Member Secretary.

The committee will have to get the methodology approved by the government within 15 days for reviewing the private forest areas provisionally identified by the North and South Goa Forest Division Committees. The committee needs to submit its report by March 10, 2020.

It may be recalled that the government in 2012 had constituted the North and South Goa Forest Division Committees for the purpose of identification of balance areas of private forests in the state. The North Goa Forest Division Committee was headed by former forest officer V T Thomas, while Francisco Araujo was the chairman of the South Goa Forest Division Committee.

Subsequently, a review committee to review the work done by the previous forest division committees was constituted, whose report was rejected in 2019 on grounds of lacunae in the methodology followed.
