Ella, Old Goa
For Dempo Sports Club coach Samir Naik, it has been a story of so near and yet so far as Goan FC won their maiden Goa Football Association (GFA) Professional League title defeating the hosts winning 2-0 in the last match of the 2018-19 season at the Dempo Sports Club Academy ground in Ella, Old Goa on Monday.
Dempo SC started the match needing to win whilst a draw sufficed Goan FC. Both teams put their best feet forward as both coaches — Clifford Miranda of Goan FC and Samir Naik of Dempo SC – put on their best thinking hats. However, it was the blend of youth and exposure that got the better of youth and experience.
Dempo SC banked on veteran Joaquim Abranches to continue with his scoring. Joaquim, who has silenced his critics – by finishing as the highest goal scorer of the League – could not get the ball in and it was the quick thinking of the fleet footed Goan FC lads that left them with their maiden title. Dempo Sports Club finished the 2018-19 season scoring sixty four goals — a major scored by Joaquim.
Goan FC entered the final stages of the league courtesy of two walkovers awarded to them by GFA as two clubs that they were to play, folded for the season because of the delayed league.
“It was a satisfying season not just because we won the title but because of the manner my boys in the team are developing. There are areas that we need to work on and I think that will be my main task next season. I am happy for everyone,” Goan FC coach Clifford Miranda told The Navhind Times after the match.
“We lost but I am happy with the manner the boys played and they way they responded to situations. We played as a team and not once did I feel that any one was indispensable. The spirit of oneness was amazing and that is what signaled us out this season,” Dempo SC coach Samir Naik told The Navhind Times after the match.
In another match played at GFA stadium in Duler, Sporting Clube de Goa beat Churchill Brothers to finish the 2018-19 season third. Salgaocar FC who was on the third slot was displaced to the fourth.
Good things come to an end!
