Goa’s Global Window

GOA’S very own World Trade Centre which was opened on Saturday will mark a new chapter in boosting trade and have better corporate connections with the rest of India and the world. There are around 200 IT companies in the state and their representatives have to travel frequently to other countries to maintain their network, get business and also set up work stations. The WTC will allow these companies a better set-up to connect with their foreign counterparts and also have a state-of-the-art working premises. It would facilitate local industry linkages with global market and open up business opportunities to small units too, and this will in turn increase visibility and identify Goa region to the world. It is a modest beginning. Though small, the Goa office is a licensed member of the WTC network and gets access to 330 centres across the world. Goan members can use global amenities which include up-to-date information base and office space in prime localities.  The Goa WTC is expected to function as a facilitator and point of entry for all products, including tourism. International members are highly aggressive in forging business links and their aggressiveness should benefit the industry in Goa. There are 329 WTCs in 92 countries and members are MSMEs, trade associations, corporate houses, PSUs and others. Members gain through export counselling, seminars, workshops, trade missions and WTCA card. The promoter of WTC-Goa is M Visvesvaraya Industrial Research and Development Centre, Mumbai, which is member of World Trade Association, New York.  It owns WTCs in Mumbai, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar and now in Goa. WTC is in partnership with local trade bodies since memberships are common and in Goa the association is with the Goa Chamber of Commerce. During the monsoon session of the Assembly, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had also announced that his government would finalize the IT policy soon and was keen to build an infrastructure to stop brain drain and try and attract IT professionals who had migrated to other countries. The WTC is a first step in this regard and it will bring under its umbrella all activities in the related field and make the functioning more effective.
