Goa customs seeks more staff from Mumbai cadre control authority

 

VASCO : Citing shortage of staff, Goa customs has asked the cadre control authority, Mumbai for additional staff including superintendents and preventive officers to check gold smuggling from the Dabolim airport.Speaking to media at Dabolim airport on Friday, Commissioner of customs, central excise and service tax Goa K Anpazhakan said that the sanctioned strength of Goa customs is 62 but it presently has only 52 and require at least another 15 personnel. He also said that air intelligence unit of customs at Dabolim airport has 18-odd staff and require at least 7 to 8 superintendents and preventive officers to keep a watch on passengers to thwart smuggling of gold and other items.

Anpazhakan said that due to shortage of staff, keeping a constant watch on movement of passengers at the integrated terminal building and frisking of passengers in airlines has become a very difficult task.

Apart from shortage of staff, work of air intelligence unit of customs at Dabolim airport is getting hampered as there is a need of special room for assistant commissioner, checking and testing room etc.

As per statistics provided by the commissioner, the air intelligence unit at Dabolim airport has made nine gold seizures since May 16 till date and collected about 30.833 kilograms gold worth Rs 8.53 crore.
