Rohan Ahuja second Goan to become International Master

PANAJI: Goan Rohan Ahuja was officially conferred with the International Master title by World Chess Federation, FIDE at its 4th Quarter Presidential Board Meeting held at Athens, Greece. IM Rohan Ahuja capped a phenomenal year in which he earned 4 IM norms in a short span of 7 months. These performances earned him a whopping 243 ELO points and he was awarded 2 titles by FIDE – first the FM title in July 2015 and later the IM title. Rohan’s current rating of 2440 is the highest amongst all Goan chess players.

 

Vagator PYSC enter semis

MAPUSA: Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club huffed and puffed before they got the better of C J De Ribandar 5-4 vie- tie-breaker to enter the semis of the X Riera Soccer Cup, organised by Saligao Sporting Club, played at Saligao grounds, here on Thursday. The teams were locked in a goalless draw at the end of the regulation time. In the tie-breaker, Rohan, Narissa, Vinayak, Tanay and Dinesh shot on target for Vagator Colts while Rohan, Abhijit, Shubham and Heston scored for the Ribandar team.

 

MES, Rosary, GEC in varsity cricket quarters

PANAJI: MES College, Zuarinagar and Rosary College, Navelim entered the quarterfinals of Goa University Inter Collegiate Cricket Championship for men, defeating SS Dempo College and St Xavier’s College, Mapusa respectively in the pre-quarterfinals played on Thursday. In the first match, MES college defeated SS Dempo college by 38 runs while Rosary College beat Xavier’s College by six wickets. Other pre-quarterfinals results: V M Salgaocar of Law, Miramar got the better of Vidya Probodhini College, Porvorim by 6 wickets. GEC, Farmagudi beat Government College, Quepem by 13 runs. DM’s College, Assagao won by 8 Wickets against PCCE, Verna. Chowgule College, Margao defeated Govt College, Borda by 5 wickets while Damodar College, Margao registered a 98-runs victory over Art College, Panaji to sail into the quarterfinals.

 

Siolim edge North Veterans 7-6

MAPUSA: Siolim defeated Viva North Veterans 7-6 via the tie-breakar to advance into the next round of the Brian Mendes Memorial Veterans Football tournament, organised by Viva North Veterans Football Club and played at the Dr Gustavo Football stadium, Candolim on Thursday. The teams were held goalless in regulation time. In the tie-breaker, Sebastian Lemos, Santosh Palyekar, David D’Souza, Jahfet D’Souza, Chandra Shankar, Nilesh Vaigankar, Shankar Dhargalkar converted for Siolim. For North Veterans, John Dias, Avinash Shirodkar, Agnelo Miranda, Genevieve Fernandes, Anthony Pontes and Trevor Antao scored for their team. Siolim’s Devanand Govenkar was declared the man-of-the-match.

 

Futsal tourney at DBO, Panaji

PANAJI: Team Evolution will be organising All Goa Futsal Tournament at Don Bosco Oratory on February 28. Interested team register their teams at the venue till February 28 noon.
