A field trip to the world of fibre optics

On September 12, Third Year Computer Engineering students of Shree Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, Shiroda visited Goa Broadband Network (GBBN) Pvt Ltd at Altihno and Tata Communications at Patto, both situated in Panaji. The students were accompanied by assistant professors Poonam Sinai Kenkre and Trupti Naik.
At GBBN, students were briefed about the company and its operations by the manager. They provide internet services in all 12 talukas covering 189 villages, 225 office buildings and around 1200 government offices.
Fibre optic cables are used to transmit data thus providing large bandwidth and good transfer rate. They also demonstrated to students live video conferencing call made to taluka-level engineers. Students were taken around the premises and were explained the functions of various components.
At Tata Communications, students were briefed about the company and its operations in Goa by the chief engineer Naresh Sakhardande. The students were then taken around the premises where they were explained various components and about network speed provided to their clients. Students were also showed various communications cables laid around the globe using a map.
