The feast of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm at St Cajetan’s Church, Assagao on September 8.
According to the ‘legado’ (pious legacy) of Confraria da Igreja de Assagao, instituted by late Raphael Viegas, the feast was preceded by nine novenas. The main celebrant was the parish priest Fr Agnelo Quadros who gave an instructive and spirited homily on the life of Mother Mary and called upon all mothers to emulate Mother Mary, and also the children to love and respect mothers, especially in their old age.
Children of the Assagao parish attended in great numbers and participated in the liturgy of the feast. They offered flowers to Mother Mary on her birthday. The choir of the parish youth was in attendance led by brother Carmel of the Pallottine Institute.
At the end of the church service, the Catechism children held a lively programme to celebrate Mother’s Day. The Legion of Mary, the active member group of Assagao parish, offered delicious cake to all the attendees while children were given goodies. They also organised a ‘home-made snacks counter‘ to raise funds in aid of the church.
As parishioners assembled in the Church premises to wish each other, a brass band belted out pleasant melodies to the happiness of all.
