FC Goa sits on top after dramatic win over ATK

MINOO FERNANDES | NT

Fatorda: Second half strikes by defender Mourtada Fall and Ferran Corominas was enough for FC Goa to carve out a win against ATK and move to the top of the Indian Super League table at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda on Saturday.

With this win, FC Goa has displaced ATK from the top that have 14 points from the same number of matches that FC Goa played.

FC Goa found the mark through Mourtada Fall in the 60th minute while Coro bulged the nets in the 66th minute.

ATK pulled a goal back through substitute Jobby Justin in the 64th minute.

FC Goa started the match with a threatening move with Hugo Boumous moving his way down the left flank and on entering the box, as he made a pass the ball was too fast for FC Goa’s Ferran Corominas to react and the chance just evaporated.

Goa’s defence which looked solid check mated ATK’s most dangerous strikers—Australian David Williams and New Zealand’s Roy Krishna who could hardly create a dent in the host’s defence manned by Carlos Penha, Seriton Fernandes and Mourtada Fall.

There was a good chance for FC Goa’s Moroccan medio Ahmed Jahouh who could not beat the rival keeper Arindam Bhattacharya in the 21st minute.

After a long spell ATK carried out a counter move which saw Spanish medio Eduardo Garcia darting into the box but before he could try any of his tricks, he was tackled well.

Galvanising well in the midfield and the striking line up, FC Goa had the ball possession for the major part of the proceedings in the first half of play and played with intent to find the mark. The team did everything well, except conversion.

Surprisingly ATK looked quite dwarfish in the first session and hardly troubled the F C Goa defence which was in no mood to give some free space for the rival strikers to manoeuvre inside the box.

ATK’s midfield lacked cohesion and could not create anything to spread the ball to the strikers who looked parched for supply and as such, the FC Goa keeper Mohammad Nawaz had a holiday of sorts under the bar being hardly tested in the first half.

FC Goa kept going strong in second session  and scored in the 60th minute through a powerful lunging header by defender Mourtada Fall who sent the ball crashing in to the far corner of ATK nets off a free kick taken Brandon

Fernandes.

ATK retaliated and levelled the score in the 63rd minute through substitute Jobby Justin who had just entered in as a substitute.

FC Goa once against went into the lead through a goal scored by Ferran Corominas off a neat pass from Hugo Boumous.

Such was the frenzied activity at either end that the teams opened up their arsenal at their disposal to outwit each other for supremacy in which FC Goa triumphed.

Substitute Manvir Singh had a great chance in the 71st minute but the striker blasted the ball wide from close.

The proceedings which looked much lively in the second half saw good scoring chances for both the teams, with FC Goa spurning away most of them wherein Manvir Singh could have done much better to find the mark.
