MARGAO: A sensational goal in added-on time by substitute Tolgay Ozbey gave FC Goa their first win in the Indian Super League as the hosts clinched a thrilling 2-1 win over Delhi Dynamos at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda Saturday night.
The long-awaited win also snapped Delhi’s unbeaten run in the tournament. Goa now move up to sixth place with four points while Delhi remain at fourth position with six points from five games.
Goa were one goal down for the major part of the game, but turned the match on its head in the last spell of 20 minutes to come from behind and snatch three vital points in a pulsating match watched by a crowd of around 18,000.
Mads Junker opened the scoring for the visitors in the 7th minute while Goa drew level late in the second-half from a Jewel Raja header (73rd minute) before Ozbey, the Australian forward of Turkish origin, sent the home crowd into raptures by slotting the winning goal in the third minute of added-on time.
FC Goa had three glorious chances within six minutes from the start, all of which they missed with Romeo Fernandes, Miroslav Slepicka and Andre Santos unable to find the mark. However, they conceded through a harmless-looking counter attack. Bruno Herrero Arias sent a pass to Junker whose not too impressive effort moved towards the left post and as Goa defence failed to react, the Danish star dashed for the ball to send it in to put Delhi Dynamos in the lead.
The rest of the play in the half belonged to FC Goa, except for another counter move in the 42nd minute when a well-taken shot by Junker flew over the bar off a neat pass from Arias.
As FC Goa went on missing chance after chance, even from handshaking distances, it appeared that Goa would not make it. However, dame luck, which eluded the Goan team did smile on their hard work in the 73rd minute when midfielder Raja produced the equaliser. Mandar Rao Dessai, who had earlier missed several chances, sent a smart pass to Romeo Fernandes, who in turn passed the ball to Raja, who headed in smartly to beat Delhi Dynamos’ 6.8 feet tall Belgium goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout.
FC Goa were then all over the rival territory but try as hard they would, a winner seemed hard to come by. The match went into added time and in the 90+3 minutes, FC Goa finally broke the deadlock when Ozbey, who had come in for captain Gregory Arnolin, scored a gem of a goal to give victory for the home side. After Delhi lost possession in the middle, Slepicka lifted the ball over the defence to play in Ozbey, who chested the ball down before rounding the keeper and steering it into the net.
