Navelim: Down by a first half goal, FC Goa demonstrated a lot of resilience and fight back spirit to register a convincing 2-1 win against Guardian Angel SC, at Rosary grounds, Navelim on Friday.
Guardian Angel SC took the lead in the 17th minute of play through Ghanian Bamba Musah following a defensive lapse. FC Goa defender Sarineo Fernandes was beaten following a through pass with Musah chasing the ball right on the top of the box.
Musah dashed forward and FC Goa’s keeper Antonio Dylan Silva charged out but Musah even dodged past the keeper and sent the ball into the empty nets to give his team the lead.
The goal was scored in a counter when F C Goa were in full cry, in the initial stages with chances after chances falling to them.
FC Goa could have taken the lead in the very first minute of play when striker Aaren Silva was left unchallenged but his header hit the cross bar.
Aaren failed again a few minutes later when he sent a strong header from inside the box, which was punched away by Guardian Angel SC keeper Pratheesh Veettil.
The play was then confined to the midfield, for a while, with both teams vying for supremacy with FC Goa having a large share of exchanges while Guardian Angel mostly relying on counter forays.
Guardian Angel SC’s goal was their first attempt at the FC Goa. Though it appeared that FC Goa were in to score an early goal, the reverse took place with Guardian Angel SC finding the mark on a defensive lapse.
But FC Goa did not give up and went on stitching some brilliant moves and it was due to some good defending by Guardian Angel SC team that the FC Goa strikers were held back from finding the mark.
Guardian Angel SC keeper Pratheesh Veettil displayed fine anticipation and frustrated the constant attempts by the FC Goa team who tried to restore parity before moving out for the lemon break.
FC Goa came up with more sting in the second half and levelled the score in the 61st minute through under-20 attacking medio Sweden Fernandes.
Substitute medio Kapil Hoble worked his way down the right flank and smartly crossed the ball to Sweden Fernandes whose angular header gave no chance at all to the Guardian Angel SC keeper.
FC Goa could have levelled the score in the 50th minute of play itself but Nesto Dias’ try hit the cross bar from inside the six yard box.
FC Goa was in complete ascendency and appeared to be striking at will given the number of dangerous moves that the team created. However, their attempts were not enough to beat the rival keeper.
FC Goa scored the match winner in the 75th minute of play after the Guardian Angel SC defence fumbled again.
Guardian Angel SC defender James Fernandes tried to intercept a harmless ball which substitute Lalnuntluanga Bawitlung dispatched towards the rival goal from inside the six yard box. James lunged forward and put his leg for the ball but the ball rolled slowly inside the Guardian Angel goal to give F C Goa the match winner.
FC Goa thereafter completely dominated the proceedings and came up with several goal scoring chances but somehow, their strikers could not inflate the score further.
On the other hand, Guardian Angel SC who also came up with some stray forays lacked fire power and accuracy when some chances fell to them.
With this win, F C Goa has collected eight points from six matches while Guardian Angel SC stay on eight points from eight matches played.
