In recognition of services under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ramco Cements Ltd, Alathiyur, bagged the trophy for holistic community development at the World CSR Congress & Awards organised by ET NOW.
The company implements various CSR initiatives for the up-liftment of the community around its factory and mines. The holistic model of community development adopted by the company covers broad areas of health and sanitation through preventive and curative health care. Under preventive care, Ramco regularly conducts health camps for early detection of illness, provides for treatment, safe drinking water, community toilets as well as SMART toilets to eliminate open defecation. The company also repairs and maintains toilets in the government schools. It creates awareness among children, women adolescent members about health, hygiene, menstrual management, toilet usage, etc.
Under curative care, Ramco undertakes treatment and surgeries, follow-up care through own medical team and employee volunteers. To improve the quality of education in the nearby 19 government schools, the company provides additional teachers based on student teacher ratio, and basic infrastructure facility like functioning toilets, compound walls for safety. Every year it incurs expenditure on uniform sets, school bags, educational materials like notebooks to nearly 1000 children to encourage them to come to school regularly. Students who score high marks in public examination are provided with cash price and appreciation certificates. Apart from this the company also organizes sports events for local youth, gives free tailoring and beautician training to women and teaches farmers new agricultural practices.
More than 120 companies, 70 NGO’s including international organizations participated in the World CSR Awards, of which 30 companies and 20 NGOs received recognition by way of awards and certificates.
Ramco received the award from Almas Jiwani, president, UN Women Canada NC Foundation and Dr Rishi Tiwari, sr. librarian and proctor- student welfare, Birla Institute of Management Technology, Noida.
