PANAJI : The defence person, arrested by the CBI in a bribery case at Vasco, had demanded money on the pretext of paying school fees of his children, sources informed.‘I need to pay the school fees of my children’, were the words of the accused Maruti Naik, subhedar major (junior engineer) at the garrison engineering naval works’ office at Shantinagar-Vasco, informed the sources.
Naik was caught red-handed on Friday while allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 20,000 in cash and Rs 35,000 in cheques (two) from a contractor to release payment towards bills. Naik has been remanded to 3-day police custody.
According to sources, the accused had told the contractor to cough up money claiming he needs to pay school fees of his children. The sources claimed that the accused is said to be a habitual offender and had previously demanded bribe to clear the pending bills of the contractor.
It is learnt that accused Naik was posted at the said office since 2013 and reportedly have been demanding bribe from the contractors.
However, this is the first case registered against Naik. The sources informed that the CBI is also probing whether the accused had previously taken bribe from other contractors. CBI investigation has revealed that the accused on previous occasions had accepted ‘self’ cheques. And, the (self) cheques were then enchased by him ‘personally.’
The complainant (contractor) had received a contract of motor maintenance at the garrison engineering naval works, and in order to release the final payment, the accused reportedly had demanded Rs 90,000. The accused had even reportedly threatened the contractor of blacklisting him if the bribe money was not paid.
