With an aim to promote dairy farming in the state, NABARD Goa, organized a state level workshop on Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) and other government sponsored schemes on August 20. Sanjay Gihar, secretary, animal husbandry department, was the chief guest at the function attended by Eknath Chakurkar, director, ICAR- CCARI, Dr Santosh V Dessai, director, department of animal husbandry and veterinary science.
Other participants included officials from lead bank (north Goa), Goa Dairy and dairy farmers.
Kamakshi S Pai, general manager, NABARD, Goa, in her key note address, outlined various initiatives of the government for boosting the animal husbandry sector particularly dairy sector.
She highlighted the importance of animal husbandry in improving the economic status of small and marginal farmers. On Goa specific issues, she emphasized on strengthening dairy infrastructure in the state so as to attain self-sufficiency in the production of milk.
In his address, Sanjay Gihar, expressed concern on the multiple schemes and called for convergence of state and central schemes for benefit of farmers. Further, he underlined the need for strong supply chain to ensure availability of quality milk and advocated the need for a local cattle market.

A reference booklet for farmers on subsidy in government sponsored schemes titled, Dairy Entrepreneurs Guide on DEDS- Goa, was released by the secretary, animal husbandry, during the workshop.
Vasant Savardekar, deputy general manager, NABARD, welcomed the guest and gave a brief overview of the highlights of the DEDS workshop. Ajay D Nayak, assistant manager, NABARD, explained the salient features of the scheme and procedure of submission of claims by banks on online portal. Other government sponsored schemes such as ACABC, NLM -EDEG, etc. and infrastructure support under dairy processing infrastructure development fund were also explained. The meeting ended with vote of thanks by KL Nayak, assistant general manager, NABARD and a resolve on the part of all stakeholders in coordinated manner to facilitate dairy development in the State.
