CUNCOLIM : After dilly dallying for nearly four years, the chieftain memorial is finally set to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on July 15.The memorial which was taken up for renovation and upgradation in 2011 was abandoned by the contractor for nearly a year and a half before the work resumed again. The renovation of the chieftain memorial was taken up at a cost of Rs 56 lakh.
The chief officer of Cuncolim municipal council Pandharinath Naik informed that Rs 37 lakh has been paid to the contractor while some electrical works are still pending which will be taken up by the electrical wing of the PWD.
Addressing a press conference in Cuncolim on Tuesday evening the chairperson Landry Mascarenhas said the project was taken up as part of the golden jubilee funds allocated to the municipality, adding that the memorial is a fitting tribute to the martyrs of Goa’s first agitation for freedom from foreign rule.
Expressing happiness about the project being completed in his tenure, he said the local MLA Rajan Naik will be the guest of honour while the director of DMA Elvis Gomes along with all councillors will be present for the inaugural function.
Replying to a query, the chairperson failed to give a satisfactory reply as to why there was a delay for nearly three years, and said the delay was because of a change in the design by the architect.
