The state government has temporarily suspended the permission granted to the Porvorim-based SRL Diagnostics for collection of throat swab samples for COVID-19 testing.

Health secretary Nila Mohanan told a   press conference in Panaji that three COVID positive results as declared by SRL’s Mumbai lab  later turned out to be negative when samples  of the same persons were tested at a government lab in the state.

“So we have decided that the permission, which we had given to the SRL to collect throat swabs here in Goa, be temporarily withheld,” She said.

The SRL Diagnostics was collecting swab samples in the state and sending them  to its  Mumbai-based laboratory for testing.

“SRL is a national chain, and one of their labs is in Mumbai which got ICMR’s nod for COVID-19 testing. Once they got the ICMR approval they approached the DHS seeking permission for swab collections here in Goa… Based on the ICMR approval we had granted them permission,” Mohanan explained.

Stating that there are adequate medical and paramedical staff to treat  COVID positive patients at the designated COVID Hospital in Margao, the health secretary said the department has deputed senior consultants of the Goa Medical College and Hospital who have joined the dedicated team of doctors at the COVID Hospital.

She maintained that there has been  no shortage of ‘personal protective equipment’, adding  that 5,000 PPEs were received from the Centre on Wednesday. On May 13,  5,000 PPEs had been allotted by the Centre  for Goa’s medical personnel.

“I have personally spoken to in-charge doctors at the COVID Hospital and assured them of providing everything the hospital requires…, ” Mohanan said.

She further said the students, who are currently answering the board exams, if found showing clinical signs and symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to answer the exam in a separate classroom and not in the common examination hall.
