Couple, daughter end lives at Kumbharjua

PONDA: In a tragic incident, a couple and their daughter committed suicide by hanging in their house at Khadapwada-Kumbharjua after 22 days of the death of their son, who died due to an illness.
The Old Goa police have identified the deceased as Ashok Naik (46), Nutan Naik (40) and their 12-year-old daughter, who was studying in Standard VII at a Marcel school.
Old Goa police inspector Krishna Sinari said that Ashok left a suicide note, stating that they were committing suicide.
“He also left behind a cash of `15,000 for performance of last rites on theirs bodies, which he has mentioned in the suicide note.” Sinari said.
The police said the bodies of the couple and their daughter were found hanging from fans in two different rooms. The bodies of the mother and the daughter were found hanging in a restaurant room, which the family was running, while Ashok’s body was found hanging in the main house.
Ashok had been running the restaurant in his house, but stopped the business activities after the death of his 18-year-old son, who was suffering from polio.
Sources said the family had not been seen on 13th day after their son’s death and thereafter they had not been seen again for three days. When the family had reappeared they told the locals that they had gone to Delhi.
On late Sunday evening, Ashok’s brother, who stays in the adjacent house, had gone out with the deceased girl to throw out waste. But on Monday afternoon he and his kin found all the three
hanging from fans. A team of Old Goa police reached the spot and shifted the dead bodies to hospital for postmortem.
Locals said that son’s death had plunged the family into gloom. This might have forced them to take the drastic step.
The news of the family’s suicide shocked the locals who rushed to the site of the tragedy.
The Old Goa police are investigating the case.
