Nerul: The North Goa district collector has declared the Malwankar colony at Fottawaddo and adjacent areas of Nerul as a micro containment zone after 26 residents of the colony area tested positive for the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been wreaking havoc in the world.
Consequent upon the declaration of the area as the micro containment zone, the locality has been sealed for eight days.
Fearing the spread of the coronavirus in the Bardez village, villagers held a meeting on Monday, deciding to keep all business establishments shut during the second half of the day.
Health officer of Candolim PHC Dr Roshan Nazareth said the meeting, which was convened by the local MLA, came to a decision to close business establishments at Nerul after 12 pm. The business establishments will remain open from 7 am to 12 pm.
The meeting was attended by the district collector, the deputy collector, the mamlatdar, Nerul panchayat members, PWD and electricity engineers, Porvorim PI and villagers.
The COVID situation has been worsening in the village, forcing health workers to take more swab samples of villagers.
Dr Nazareth said that 48 swab samples of the police personnel were taken, which have tested negative for the deadly virus.
A patient of a hospital at Candolim tested positive for the disease. Hence 45 swabs of high-risk contacts will be taken on Tuesday.
The health workers have started testing of 200 villagers of Sonarbhat at Verem. Swab samples of 123 more Sonarbhat villagers will be drawn shortly.
