Chinchinim down Manora on penalties, reach finals

CRC, Chinchinim entered the final of 10th Cuncolim Union Rolling Trophy football tournament defeating Youth Club of Manora 6-4 via the tie breaker played at Cuncolim grounds on Sunday. The teams played a 1-1 draw in the regulation time.

Eldon Cardozo put Youth Club of Manora in the lead with a 10th minute strike while Kidron Fernandes brought in parity in favour of CRC, Chinchinim team in the 70th minute of play after dodging two rival defenders and placing the ball neatly to the far corner of Manora nets.

Starting the match on a promising note, Youth Club of Manora went into the lead through a brilliant strike by Eldon Colaso in the 10th minute.

It was a good build up from the middle when Joysthan Cardozo who dodged two rival defenders sped into the box and then after seeing Eldon in the right place sent the ball to him who lost no time in slamming it in past the bewildered CRC, Chinchinim keeper Sunny Fernandes.

Goaded by early success, Youth Club of Manora then began to control the proceedings, having a large say in ball possession and positional play. Manora’s midfield looked well organised as they spread the ball well on the flanks. Their defence too looked strong and cohesive.

Roman Gomes, Danny Fernandes, Liston Cardozo and Klins Mendes combined superbly in defence as well as the midfield and with perfect understanding were able to take the ball deep inside the rival territory where the Manora team met with stiff resistance.

It was only lack of concentration on the part of CRC, Chinchinim defenders that fetched the Manora team the early goal as the CRC, Chinchinim defence gave nothing away except for that 10th minute delay in tackling Eldon when he scored the goal in the first session.

Chinchinim almost found the leveller midway into the first half when Myron Ferrao hit the cross bar off a great move that was initiated by Chadel Fernandes and company in the midfield. The second session saw both the teams battling it out for supremacy with the ball rolling from one end to the other.

CRC, Chichinim keeper Sunny Fernandes twice leaped high to clear the ball to safety. He countered Klins Mendes in the 55th minute and thereafter Danny Fernandes.

But Chichinim made some good effort to find the mark and Chadel Fernandes and Sunny Simoes were in the thick of action and a goal looked imminent in the favour of their team.

Chadel Fernandes sent a hot shot in the 60th minute but the goal keeper of Youth of Monora team grabbed the ball safely.

Chinchinim kept on pressing hard to get the equaliser which they needed so much but their tries were nullified by the strong Manora defence. Their keeper Lio Colaso also brought off good saves.

As time ticked by CRC, Chinchinim went all out for the kill and levelled the score through Kidron Fernandes when he dodged two rival defenders to place the ball in.

In the tie breaker CRC, Chinchinim proved to be the better shooters.

Chief guest Terence D’Costa, Police Inspector of Cuncolim Police station, gave the man of the match award to Kidron Fernandes of CRC, Chinchinim.

CRC, Chinchinim will now meet Sporting Club of Davorlim in the final scheduled to be played on November 3.
