To address the dual citizenship issue, the central government will set up an authority to deal with the cases. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said a report on the issue by a committee under the ministry is ready to be submitted to the government.
Addressing media at the BJP office in Panaji on the occasion of completion of two years of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre, Rijiju Friday said that people have been victim of difference in the rules of the two countries, India and Portugal.
“It is unfortunate that many people are victims of the provisions in our country as well as in Portugal. I had personally taken special interest and set up a committee. The report is ready,” he said.
Stating that the people of Goa should not be compelled to run to Delhi for their needs, Rijiju said that an authority will be set up in the state to deal with the issue. “The authority will decide on anything related to the dual citizenship issue on a daily basis as per the requirements and needs of local people here. Basically, we don’t want the decisions to be taken in Delhi; it should be done in Goa,” he said.
He stated that for so many years, nothing was done in India and the issue was related to conflicts in the provisions in the Constitutions of both the countries. “Very soon, we will come out with the notification and the authority will be set up,” he said.
The Union minister said that Indian Muslims do not subscribe to the violent ideology. He said, “By and large, the Muslim community in India does not subscribe to the violent ideology and the community clerics and scholars have come out strongly condemning attempts of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to lure the Indian youth.”
Responding to a question about the clean chit given by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to Sadhvi Pragya Thakur recently in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, he said that the earlier investigation into the case was a dramatic kind of act created by the erstwhile Congress-led government and a game plan to create a communal divide. “It was a dramatic kind of act created by the Congress party. We would not like to interfere in the investigation,” he said.
Stating that the Supreme Court had asked the NIA to not only prosecute the guilty but also bring the facts before the people, the Union minister said, “That is exactly what the NIA has done. They have brought the facts before the people of India.”
