Centre announces Rs 400 crore to develop MPT infra

Vasco: With an aim to turn the Mormugao Port into a world-class international cruise destination, Union Minister of State for Shipping (Independent charge) Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday announced Rs 400 crore to develop the Port and proposed a ropeway connecting Mormugao Port to Dona Paula, developing space allocated to the Western India Shipyard Ltd (WISL) for setting up international and domestic cruise terminals, starting a ferry service and roll-on/roll-off ships which will be used for the transportation of cars and other automobiles. 

The Union Minister of State for Shipping (Independent charge) Mandaviya made the announcement during his visit to the Mormugao Port to inaugurate immigration centre for cruise terminal, a project funded by Union Ministry of Tourism at a cost of Rs 2.12 crore. The function was attended by Union Minister of State for Defence Shripad Naik, Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar, secretary for Ministry of Shipping Gopal Krishna, MPT chairman Dr E Ramesh Kumar, deputy chairman Guruprasad Rai and other officials of the MPT.

The immigration centre which is inaugurated at cruise terminal will have 24 counters for immigration with LAN connections and other modern facilities. The immigration counter will open new opportunities for the Indian cruise industry.

“In order to promote tourism in state, we have planned a ropeway project which will be connecting Mormugao Port to Dona Paula. The ropeway project would strengthen tourism industry by connecting cities in Goa. Apart from ropeway project, we also plan to develop the space allocated to WISL for setting up international and domestic cruise terminal, commencing a ferry services and roll-on/roll-off ships which will be used for the transportation of cars and other automobiles costing Rs 400 crore,” added Mandaviya.

The Union Minister of State for Defence Naik, while speaking on the occasion, said that ropeway will be an advanced step for boosting tourism in Goa.
