CCP willing to aid financially weak housing societies: city Mayor

Panaji: Corporation of City of Panaji is willing to help those housing societies which are not in a position to set up treatment plant, said the city Mayor Uday Madkaikar, and added that the housing societies and hotels in the city are collectively generating 10 tonne of wet waste on a daily basis.

Madkaikar said, “We will help only those housing societies which are financially weak by providing them with manpower and machinery.”

The CCP is firm on implementing the decision by the end of October 2019, and then stop collecting garbage generated by large housing societies  comprising more than 25 flats, and 5-star hotels. He said that in this regard, the corporation has already sent notices to all the housing societies and hotels, and already conducted two meetings of the  committee members of the housing societies and managements of the hotels.

“During the meeting, all these people were told about the decision and the deadline besides consequences – the CCP will not lift their garbage even if it starts rotting. So, as a preventive measure, they should comply with the guidelines of the corporation,” he added.

“Till date, only two hotels namely Vivanta by Taj and Hotel Fortune have asked for 2-week’s time to set up garbage treatment plants. So, we will collect their garbage during that period or till they set up the plants,” he said. “In all, there are 12 -15 housing societies within the city limits, which are having above 25 apartments, and generating over 10 tonne of garbage on a daily basis, and if this is done by them then the pressure on the CCP will decrease,” he added.

He said that “in case of new housing societies, we will take a deposit of Rs 1 lakh or Rs 1.5 lakh monthly contribution and then will support them in buying compost tumblers or  machinery required for the project.  Plant setting up expense is somewhere around Rs 70-80,000 depending upon the size.” “We have set up a treatment plant at Dhanalaxmi society at Bhatulem, which is having 75 flats, Government officers’ colony at Altinho and others, and these plants are proving to be beneficial for the residents there as well the CCP,” he added.
